Updated Opening Weekend Box Office Prediction for Captain Marvel
Just over a month ago, I provided made a box office prediction for Captain Marvel. My original prediciton said that Captain Marvel would make $168.5+ million at the box office. The review embargo has lifted and social media is starting to fill with opinions. Some of the initial reviews for Captain Marvel appear to be mixed, but I'm not casting judgement on the film yet. My prediction for this weekend needs a slight update, but this isn't a big deal.
At the time of writing, we are starting to seen an uptick in searches for Captain Marvel on Google. Based on previous trends, the uptick in searches for Captain Marvel do not appear to be catching up to Black Panther or Avengers: Infinity War. The uptick in searches for Captain Marvel seems to be heading in a direction past 2017's Thor Ragnarok. Variety is reporting that Captain Marvel will make $145 Million Opening weekend, which sounds low (to me).
Based on the reviews for the film that are out right now, I'm not particularly shocked at what some of the critics are saying. Many of the critics on Rotten Tomatoes, imply that the film is a good start to an otherwise bland year in film. The chatter on social media leads me to believe that Captain Marvel is not the groundbreaking film some people expected it to be. Users on /r/boxoffice have a large range of predictions, but I think many of the predictions being offered by /r/boxoffice readers underestimate how large the Marvel brand has grown.
People are going to see Marvel movies regardless of what a handful of reviewers say. I think Captain Marvel shouldn't be treated as "toss-up" as to how performs at the box office. The data and social chatter show that people are interested in this film, Brie Larson, and how it will affect Avengers: Endgame. We cannot ignore the fact that movies like Captain Marvel CM (and Black Panther) are helping Disney & Marvel Studios reach an audience beyond white males.
Simply comparing Google trend & Rotten Tomatoes reviews as a benchmark, Captain Marvel will make bank. I don't believe Captain Marvel will crack the $200 Million dollar weekend barrier but it has the potential to get close. My new prediction puts Captain Marvel at $178 Million Dollar opening weekend – just enough to take the opening weekend record for March.
