Detective Pikachu - Early Box Office Prediction
I've been reading predictions for the Detective Pikachu opening weekend and I'm appalled at the numbers being thrown out for the opening weekend totals. Some of these predictions, like this thread on reddit, are terribly low across the board. Despite the release of Avengers 4, Detective Pikachu can and will prove to attract a wide audience.
Pokemon is a valuable piece of IP. This is a family-friendly brand, on the verge of launching a massive movie franchise. I have some suspicion that Ryan Reynolds playing the lead as Pikachu might turn some people off. However, I think Ryan Reynolds is the household name and draw a film like this needed to get the 20 and 30 somethings to the box office. Deadpool proves that his brand of comedy can win in theaters - even when comedy movies are struggling to be huge successes.
I expect nothing less than a $250 Million Dollar opening weekend Worldwide. It will make at least $80 Million in the United States during opening weekend. If the pandemonium that occurred during the Pokemon Go launch of Summer 2016 can be replicated, this movie might even take away from Avengers 4 (still untitled at the time of this writing) box office total. Detective Pikachu will make no less than $900 million dollars. I expect this to make $1.1 Billion at the Box Office Worldwide.
If you have any affinity for the Pokemon brand, you should be impressed by the trailer that was released this month. The Pokemon have jumped out of our imaginations and into reality. This will be the start of a massive live-action franchise. I hope this does well. Now I'll wait for my live action Digimon Movie, it will happen.
