Cloak and Dagger Season One Review

Cloak and Dagger Season One Review

Over the last two weeks, I've watched season one of Cloak and Dagger on Hulu. Typically, I don't spend much time with television shows on Hulu, but Cloak and Dagger pleasantly surprised me. Cloak and Dagger season one is one of a few Marvel Television shows that lives up to its hype. If you're a Marvel Entertainment Fan, Cloak and Dagger needs to be added to your list of 'must-watch' TV Shows as soon as possible.

The dynamic between Cloak and Dagger, played by Aubrey Joseph and Olivia Holt, really makes the show worth keeping up with. I'm not invested in the romantic dynamics between the two characters (yet), but it will be interesting to see how the writers incorporate this romance as the show progresses. Overall the casting in season one is rounded out by stellar performances from Emma Lahana, Noëlle Renée Bercy, and JD Evermore. In Season Two of Cloak and Dagger, I want to see them flesh out Noëlle's character Evita and what role she will play in the lives of Tyrone and Tandy. Olivia and Aubrey have moments where they are really in tune with the playfulness between their to characters, but their relationship needs to become more complex beyond bonding over teenage rebellion.

Season One of Cloak and Dagger was well written. There is not a single moment of this series that does not move the narrative of the story forward in one way or another. There are some sub-plots within the series (Tandy's relationship with Liam stands out) that build the protagonists character but distract from the overall narrative. I hope as the show continues they move away from making Roxxon the tentpole antagonist of the plot. The season finale is fast-paced, packed with content, and will leave you on the edge of your seat for more. When the final credits rolled in the season finale, I immediately rushed to find out whether Cloak and Dagger was renewed for a second season.

Overall season one of Cloak and Dagger was dope and left me wanted more. I like how this show films on location in New Orleans and lets the feeling of the city flow through the shows narrative and setting. Marvel hasn't done an incredible job of trying to bring the narrative of police violence to the small screen and the writing will need to be tightened up in season two. I think Aubrey Joseph and Olivia Holt could be on the verge of being marquee stars of Marvel Television. The success of Cloak and Dagger will depend on how fast the producers let the relationship between Tyrone and Tandy become complex to their viewers. Freeform greenlit an incredible show, my only hesitation with Cloak and Dagger is that not many people know about or are talking about this show. I'm excited to see season two of Cloak and Dagger and I will be sure to watch season two weekly.
