The Accessibility of Nerd Culture is Amazing
The
internet has created incredible change in our society. Now more than
ever, nerd culture is more accessible. Being a nerd is cool today.
It's amazing to see how being a nerd has transformed how society
functions. Instead of criticizing "the other", we choose to
embrace it.
Yes,
there are still the idiots that choose to ostracize nerds, but
the prevalence in our culture is apparent. There are six more
comic book movies coming out in 2017, with Spiderman:
Homecoming due for release this weekend. In 2018, there are
at least 9 comic book films coming out including the first Marvel
film starting a Black person, Black
Panther.
I'm
a dork for the MCU, but some of my favorite pieces of work are The
Walking Dead, Static Shock, and the DC Animated Universe. On any
given weekday, I'm watching WWE or reading the
latest dirt sheets from Dave Meltzer. During the weekend, I'll
keep up with or rewatch whatever comes to mind.
Whenever
I go into stores now, I'll cross paths with the Toy Aisle in Target,
see all of the stuff and think to myself "Wow, they
didn't have all of this when I was a kid!"
It's crazy to see how popular being a nerd has become. I never imaged
I would see Power Rangers on the silver screen again, but I did.
Going
to the movies during some weekends can feel like a Halloween
celebration and I'm okay with that. Ten years ago, wearing costumes
to an opening night screening was
frowned upon, but that's not the case anymore. It's amazing to see
how yesterday's nerd's (today's parents) have broken barriers that
make being a dork, nerd, blerd, geek, etc popular. I'm glad that I'm
a blerd and every day I get to enjoy a little piece of the culture is
great.
